Associate Degree Programs

According to the Degree Authorization Act, of May 2002, allowing private institutions to apply for degree-granting status (as public institutions do), Columbia College, following a thorough evaluation process conducted by the Degree Quality Assessment Board (DQAB) was given authorization to award both Associate of Arts and Associate of Science Degrees.

At Columbia College students take university-level courses in the University Transfer Program. Associate of Arts and Associate of Science Degrees require completion of specific requirements. The requirements are standardized at every college in B.C., creating a standardized credential to present to potential employers and are designed to provide a solid foundation in one particular area of study while encouraging students to take a wide range of courses, guaranteeing real breadth in their educational experience.

What is the Value of an Associate Degree?

The Associate Degree stands as a credential in its own right, acceptable to many employers who are seeking students with recognized post-secondary education. As Associate Degrees may be awarded after two full years of study at the first- and second-year university levels, it may appeal to both students who prefer not to complete a four-year degree and those who plan to do so in the future.

Associate Degree programs are standardized across B.C. allowing for easier transfer for students. British Columbia’s universities recognize the value and rigour of Associate Degrees, and accept them as a basis for direct admission to third year of baccalaureate programs. BC’s public universities (and TWU) guarantee a full 60 transfer credits to students admitted on the strength of an Associate Degree (though specific course requirements for baccalaureate degree programs must still be fulfilled if not completed as part of the Associate Degree). Columbia College has already received assurance from UBC and UVic that its Associate Degree holders will receive the same treatment those from public colleges. Some universities give some admission priority to Associate Degree holders, and the College expects that these policies will apply to holders of Associate Degrees from Columbia College.
